“You were right.”

My daughter, Jaylee, is a gymnastics ADDICT. She has NO other interests. She is determined to become an elite gymnast, compete in the NCAA at a top school, and compete in the Olympics at 19 (the first Olympics she will be eligible to compete in if the age requirements stay the way they are). It is so amazing watching her learn the physical and mental dedication it takes to work toward such a lofty goal.
Two weeks ago, I was scrutinizing our current food choices in an effort to make them healthier and better for our daughter Karly, whose little body is fighting off Lyme Disease at the moment. I told Jaylee that I felt that she was eating too much hidden sugar or foods that convert to sugar, and that it was likely a major factor in why she was feeling more tired than usual, and why she had knee ligament pain (something she hasn’t had in the past). So, she started an elimination diet with me…complaining the entire time.
We didn’t start “all-in” right away, because she is picky and I was trying to help her find enough recipes she likes first. We started by ensuring a healthy, no-sugar breakfast each day instead of her normal gluten-free but flour-heavy options (and of course we were also using essential oils and targeted supplements to help support ligament healing).
On Friday night, after practice, Jay spoke up from complete silence in the car and said the three words we parents would all love to hear from our kids more often: “You were right.”
What? I seriously am not sure this particular child has EVER said that before, so of course I was curious. I asked, “Right about what baby?” She replied, “Eating healthier this week really did make a difference. My skills were much better and my knee hurt much less. I had an amazing night. Even my coaches said so.” Wow.
Yesterday, at her meet, she won third place all-around, first on bars, first on vault, and tied for sixth on floor. She fell off the beam, but not because of knee pain. Win for the Mom. Now, I just hope she remembers that lesson for a very, very long time.
